Recommended window film tools

A short list of the basic tools for cutting and installing flat-glass window film. We chose widely available, well-reviewed products of each type; we have not tested every one, and your film manufacturer's instructions come first.

Cutting and trimming
- OLFA 9 mm slide-lock utility knife (A-1): The usual tool for trimming film at the frame. Takes standard 9 mm snap-off blades.
- OLFA 9 mm Ultra-Sharp snap-off blades, 50-pack (ABB-50B): Snap off a segment often: a dull blade tears or drags the film.
- Mayes 36" aluminum straight edge (10208): For straight cross-cuts and slits when cutting pieces from the roll.
Installing
- rabbitgoo 3-piece window film installation tool set: Squeegees for pushing out the slip solution on home windows.
- HTVRONT 4-piece window film kit for home glass: An alternative starter kit with squeegee, knife and scraper.
- SUPER+ continuous fine-mist spray bottles, 2-pack: For the slip solution your film manufacturer specifies.
- SEEKONE 1800 W heat gun, 2 temperature settings: Mainly for shrinking film on curved (automotive) glass. Most flat windows do not need one.
Measuring and preparing the glass
- STANLEY FATMAX 25 ft tape measure (33-725): Long reach and 1/16" markings, enough for large panes.
- Razor blade scraper with 15 spare blades: Removes paint specks and residue from the glass before installing.
- Puomue lint-free microfiber glass cloths, 6-pack: For the final clean: any dust left under the film shows as a bubble.
Window film
The right film depends on the job (solar control, privacy, safety or decorative) and on the roll widths that suit your glass. Plan the cuts with the calculator first, then compare rolls of the width you need:
